The assignment was to design a concrete hyperbolic paraboloid, with special considerations for the aggregate, formwork and mix used in terms of color and texture. After numerous test samples, we were inspired by the addition of rustic, earthy red tones and  the ability of fabric to transform a hard, solid material like concrete into something that “felt” soft, malleable and fluid.

Experimenting with the concrete mix, formwork, and aggregate, we conducted a series of sample tests. The first set considered the smoothness and roughness of the mix, as well as the results from plastic wrap and masking tape as formwork.

Preferring the look of the smooth mix, we went on to experiment with fabric formwork and the addition of dyes to create a softer look that took advantage of the opportunities of concrete.
